My heart absolutely jumps when I see you in a draft. You are one of the coolest Magic cards I ever had the pleasure to play with. You are draft chaff. You cost 10 cents. Nobody cares about you. You are slow, hard to trigger, and when you trigger it still takes even more mana to use the trinket artifact tokens you produce. But for me that is not the case. No. Because when I draft you, I do so in my Emblem Cube.
You are in my ‘Alles-2’ Cube. That is an Emblem Cube where every player starts with an Emblem that says: “All spells, activated and triggered abilities cost 2 generic mana less.” I made a video explaining my design journey with this Cube. There aren’t many cards in this Cube for whom the context shift is bigger than it is for you, Fae Offering. Not only do you only cost 1 mana now, both the Clue and Food tokens are now free to sacrifice. But those are still not the best things about you in this Cube. If someone plays you on turn 2 together with a one mana creature, you trigger at the end of the turn. You see yourself as a ‘non-creature spell’. Absolutely insane and amazing play patterns. You are crazy strong and fun.
I also love the challenge you offer my drafters. Because they need to balance their number of creature and non-creature spells in their deck. They need to value a low curve, so it is simple to trigger you. But there is this cool little thing in this Cube. There are a lot of trinket artifacts like Wanderer’s Twig that are very good in this Cube. Wanderer’s Twig is essentially a fetchland for basics thanks to the emblem, but it is also very good at triggering you, Fae Offering. Not only are your play patterns in-game absolutely amazing, you also challenge my drafters in a way that is so cool.
But now I hear my regular reader Joe thinking: ‘But how the hell are you going to combine cards from this Emblem Cube together with cards from your non-Emblem Cubes in your new Love Letters Cube after these 365 days?’. A very valid question: I am going to alter the Emblem Cube cards. So cards just do what they say, but all the Emblem Cards are going to be altered to be played as if they are played in the Emblem Cube. I can’t wait to play you in a Cube where I get to combine normal Magic cards with -2 cards. You are going to make my heart jump.
With love,
Hanjo
