You’ve been a Standard staple from back in the day. 15 years ago you won a Grand Prix, which is a real accomplishment. After your standard days you’ve seen some Pauper play, but even there you are now a forgotten relic of the past. To me that is a shame. I remember those days 15 years ago when you were printed in Innistrad. A perfect control card for Standard power level because of your card selection, card advantage in the late game thanks to your flashback and potential for even more card advantage because of your graveyard clause with your friend Think Twice. But these days 3 mana for some card selection and potential card advantage just doesn’t cut it any more, anywhere.
But I’ve found a perfect new home for you. The only thing you needed to compete again was having that magical thing card selection needs: be one mana. I play you in my Alles-2 Cube, my cost reduction emblem Cube. I love giving the forgotten relics of the past a new home when their context changes by the cost reduction and you are a perfect example for this. With this Cube I was aiming for a Legacy Cube power level feel. So cards like Divination were off the table, straight up card advantage for only one mana was a no go. But looking at 4 cards, filling up the graveyard, and having flashback was on the table. You are crazy strong, even without the flashback, in this Cube. But that is also the fun part, players can splash your flashback because they get what they need even if they don’t get to flashback you. That works great with a Castle Sengir in this Cube.
I loved playing with you back in 2011/12 Standard. But I love you even more now. There is nothing like you in Magic. Card selection for mana is always a Brainstorm, Ponder or Preordain effect. Each of them amazing, but none of them a one mana Impulse that fills up the graveyard and has flashback. I think you would break regular Magic, but in this Cube you feel intune, you are perfect again.
With love,
Hanjo
