Talking about a perfect Magic card. You are one of my favourite Magic cards ever. I remember when you were hella expensive, and rightly so. You were the blue Thoughtseize, the only thing is, you are slapped on a perfect tempo creature. You get a whole bunch of information, control your opponents possibilities, and can temporise the game. Because when one takes a look with you, one gets to decide their gameplan. To either race your opponent, or take it slow and trade in combat if necessary. I miss cards like you in current Magic.
I was watching both Modern Regionals last weekend, both in Los Angeles and Gent (where my friends were playing). Modern isn’t what I remember it is. I remember Jeskai midrange decks playing you, Vendilion Clique, and being perfect. Perfect at controlling the tempo of the game. Perfect at timing the moment you go from being careful to flat out racing your opponent. Those are the days of the past. These days decks are crazy strong. There are no decks that temporise the game anymore. All decks are so strong there is no time anymore to temporise the game, games just run away from you when you blink. If it’s not a quick Broodscale combo, a turn 3 Storm win, or a Izzet Prowess deck bashing your face in on turn 3, it’s looking at an Orim’s Chant in your upkeep wondering where your time went to actually play the game.
Look, Modern actually looks like it is in a relatively good space. Maybe it’s better without Kozilek’s Command, but who am I to judge? All I want to judge is what makes a Cube fun, and to me that is you, Vendilion Clique. I can be a stubborn man when I want to be, and I still run you in my Power Cube. I feel like there are so many one-two punch combinations in that Cube, that taking a peek and maybe tearing one of those punches apart, is still very strong. At least that is what I keep telling myself, because otherwise I would just miss you too much. Because even though I have designed much better Cube environments for you to shine, just like you used to do in the Jeskai Midrange type decks, my friends do love themselves some Power Cube. I just try to give it a couple of stubborn nostalgic tweaks so I’ll enjoy it too, together with you.
With love,
Hanjo
