I play you in my Peasant Cube. For the longest of time Jace’s Ingenuity was in that Cube. When you were printed you were just a strictly better version. I don’t go power max within the restriction, but I do try to update with the strictly better versions that are intune for the power leven of that Cube. Jace’s Ingenuity always was a good card in that Cube, but not as good as Fact or Fiction or Tidings. But what is fun about a Cube in my opinion is that no one draft is ever the same. Sometimes you get the best version of a card, sometimes you’ve got to do with the 2nd best, sometimes you kinda need both.
Contructed decks have base numbers. Around 24 lands, as many 4-offs as possible because those are the best spells for your deck (excluding toolboxes). Taking that theory to the extreme you have 36/4=9 different cards in your deck. A singleton Cube offers players base numbers as well: 16 lands and 24 different cards in your deck. There is a lot more depth in how games will play out if you have 24 different cards in your deck, plus you are only playing 3 matches with the deck. You’ve got to figure it out fast. I think this is one of the biggest charms of limited for me, because of these base numbers limited offer so much variation and depth in the puzzles it offers it’s players. In constructed because you are playing a lot more than 3 matches with a smaller pool of different cards training with that specific set of cards and finding patterns between them is so important. In limited the training is so different.
The other night we drafted my Peasant Cube, and my friend Tom was talking about the creature type Wizards the whole draft. ‘Why aren’t you a Wizard?!’, ‘Wizard, wizard, wizard’, ‘Ah finally, a wizard’. I never put you, Arcane Epiphany, in my Peasant Cube to signal an abundance of Wizards to support you. I think you are great at 5 mana, but just sometimes, you get discounted by a random Wizard in this Cube, which makes you a strictly better Jace’s Ingenuity. There are only 18 Wizards in this Cube and 2 cards that make a Wizard token. It isn’t a theme, it’s a happy accident. But it’s funny how hyperfocussed a drafter can be when they see ‘if Wizard’ printed on a card. There are so many assumptions behind that, that I almost doubt to put Jace’s Ingenuity back in for you. But giving it a good thought this morning I won’t, because I love myself a happy accident in Cube way too much.
With love,
Hanjo
PS: Tom of course went 3-0 that night, even without having a happy accident with you. You’re just good, even at 5 mana.
