You are the type of card I love. You are created to abuse other cards. Returning cards back from your graveyard to play always screams abuse. Because it is just so easy to cheat on mana with a reanimation spell. You used to be played in Standard, making your biggest splash in Quick and Toast. Abusing the evoke creatures Mulldrifter and Cloudthresher. I also played you in ‘UB Mannequin’, abusing you together with Mullrifter and Shriekmaw. You are so efficient with the evoke creatures. But the thing I love most about you, is the fact that you are an instant.
I love combat tricks. I wrote in length about this in my love letter to Thrill of the Hunt. That you double as a cheat spell and a combat trick is what I love most about you. You sneak creatures in front of unsuspecting attackers, especially in cube when people don’t know what’s coming for them. And all of that for the downside that it is more easy to kill your targets, which is just an added bonus, because then they are back where they belong to be abused all over again.
In 2019 I was standing looking at my Com/Unc Cube laid out on a table. We were doing a Rotisserie draft that was part of one of my Cube Invitational tournaments. I just went 2-1 in the first draft, and chose the 7th seat in the rotisserie. I had a whole pick order written down together with followup strategies. In each of the 6 picks before me my list kept getting smaller and smaller. When it was my turn I basically had 2 options left. I could take Mulldrifter, and on the way back pick up Shriekmaw, to set myself up for you, Makeshift Mannequin. Or I could take Swords to Plowshare and on the way back pick up Path to Exile, getting the most efficient removal spells in the cube. I of course choose your route, Makeshift Mannequin. It paid off, we went 3-0, cruised to a 5-1 first seat and crushed the top 4 to win the cube invitational. Having you abuse evoke creatures was still a winning formula.
With love,
Hanjo
