I love you. I loved playing you in the old Big Red standard deck in 2004/05. The classic line there was playing you on turn 1 with the help of a Chrome Mox, then on turn 2 play Arc-Slogger with the help of Seething Song. Personally I liked the turn 1 Slith Firewalker, turn 2 Sword of Fire and Ice plus equip better, but I wasn’t picky, every time I could play you on turn 1 I was a happy little camper.
In 2005 I was 15 years old when the owner of my local game store, ‘Het Spellenhuis’, told me about a qualifier he was organising for this tournament for kids younger than 16 years old: The Junior Super Series. He told me I should play the qualifier, I did, and I qualified. The promo reward for qualifying was you, Slith Firewalker. A beautiful promo I still have today, 21 years later, and cherish for the beautiful memories.
The Dutch Junior Super Series is the first tournament I played outside of my LGS. It was held at the iconic ‘Denksportcentrum Utrecht’, where all big Dutch tournaments back in the day were held. It is at this tournament I met my good friend Danny, my co-writer here. I have so many fond memories of this tournament: of the people I met, the way it kickstarted my go at competitive Magic, the way it humbled me into my hunger for more. A hunger for growing as a Magic player, a hunger that I still have 21 years later. Man I loved playing at that tournament.
I love you Slith Firewalker, for always reminding me about those memories. Because you do, every time I see you in my Peasant Cube. Because I curate that cube with one main goal in mind: there should be a place for you in that cube. Because even though I build cubes to be played in competitive settings by the spikes, competitive players, pro tour competitors, that doesn’t mean I can’t combine that with creating a 432 card museum for you.
With love,
Hanjo
