My friend Micha-el used to be quite a good Magic player. He made it to the Pro Tour, almost made top 8 of a Grand Prix (didn’t on OMW%). He was also a virtuous deck brewer. I’ve dedicated a Cube to his brilliance as a deck designer and this isn’t his first mention in one of my letters. Micha-el did step away from competitive Magic a long time ago. The old days of Magic had a problem that frustrated the hell out of Micha-el and drove him away from the game: resource variance.
Drawing too many or too few lands in Magic is a pain. It is this resources system that for some people makes the game, and for others breaks it. Magic has tried to mitigate this by making lands modal spells. Actual modal spells with cards like Sink into Stupor, Boseiju, Who Endures or Abandoned Air Temple. They are now even going as far as printing fetchable utility lands in The Lonely Mountain. These days lands are able to provide players a lot more gameplay than they used too. Flooding isn’t the same anymore if half your lands are actually spells. I think this new era of Magic would have suited Micha-el so much better.
Micha-el has since he stepped away from competitive Magic been getting his competitive TCG fix in multiple different TCG’s over the years that try to solve this problem. But with his old Magic buds he still on occasion plays Magic, in the form of Cube. From all my Cubes, my emblem reduction Cube ‘Alles-2’, has by far the most modal lands. Because of the emblem landcyclers become very potent modal lands, and recently Wizards printed a set of landcyclers that are perfect for my Alles-2 Cube, including you, Colossal Collision. I can’t wait to play with you, to fall in love with you. I’ve been really enjoying all these landcyclers in this Cube a lot, like a lot. Your base rate in this Cube is so strong (Prismatic Vista), and when I don’t need the lands anymore I can always use you as a green removal spell. You just sound too perfect for this Cube, adding even more depth to the modality of lands in this Cube. All that is left now is to seduce Micha-el later this month at our annual Magic weekend to draft my Alles-2 Cube to discover this new side of Magic.
