I love modal cards. I think modal cards are very interesting game pieces that make for even more fun Magic puzzles. I especially like modal lands because it takes a little edge of the resource variance Magic has. I personally don’t really like the practical solution of double faced cards. I think taking them out of the sleeve is an unnecessary hassle, given that you found the right type of sleeve that doesn’t show it on the back. And don’t even get me started on those very, very, very ugly checklist cards. I do like the idea of transforming cards, and I think the Kamigawa way, the flip way, your way, is by far the best.
I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I’ve played a lot of Magic during the Kamigawa years, being a Magic obsessed teenager and all. And one of the cards I played with in Standard was your brother Nezumi Shortfang. But you, Nezumi Graverobber, has been in my Peasant Cube since day one. 17 years strong now. And I have always enjoyed your flip design, I have always thought it to be very elegant.
In 2010 double faced cards were introduced in the world. And don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of double faced cards. I love Delver of Secrets for example, I just always disliked their physical solution. Since day one I’ve been sad that Delver of Secrets hasn’t been a flip card (now that is a secret layer I would love to see, I would need 10 of those for my DelverDelver). I get that some of the flip cards their design would not fit on just a front facing card. But I think limiting the amount of text one can put on a Magic card would be a good thing. And limiting that to just the front side is enough text for the players to read through.
Because you, Nezumi Graverobber, are a perfect example that with this restriction of one side one can easily achieve amazing complex gameplay. Both your sides have very strong abilities that one would like to abuse in any moment of the game. Timing your flip, losing one ability but gaining the other, is a lovely little mini game. And sometimes you are just a quick 4 power banger to smash someone’s face in. You are my favourite piece of graveyard interaction to put in a Cube (no wonder you are in 5). With the added perfect physical solution to a very elegant design problem sprinkled with a bit of nostalgia.
With love,
Hanjo
