I used to be a competitive player, a grinder and a fervent Cube lover. I always hated it that people never took Cube seriously. Cube was casual, for fun, for shits and giggles. I didn’t like that. I wanted to see my favourite format being played at full speed, by people who gave it their all. So in 2015 I organised my first Cube Invitational with the goal to see Cube being played at full speed. I never organised a a tournament before, so I didn’t play myself.
It was a huge success. So I organised a 2nd Cube Invitational in 2016, which was also a huge success. Everyone loved playing them, everyone was giving it their all and I saw a whole group of talented competitive players play my favourite format Cube at full speed. But I did realise something very important. I’m an organiser 3rd, designer 2nd and player first. I love playing Magic, I kinda hated it not playing myself. So for my 3rd Cube Invitational I decided to play and organise at the same time.
I just found my tournament report I made about that 3rd Cube Invitational. Lovely to read 10 years later. I made it to the top 4. The draft for the top 4 was Silent Auction with my Mich Masters Cube. Silent Auction is such an intense format and I was drafting it with 2 absolute legends in the format, my dear friends Wander and Leon. Luckily they were playing each other in their semi-finals so they were very focussed on each other. I won my semi’s and got to play the finals against Wander, the winner of my first Cube Invitational. I drafted a very, very cool BW Clerics deck playing 2 copies of you, Blood Artist. Wander drafted a very potent mono red deck with 2 Blood Knight and 2 Fanatic of Mogis. I was scared of his deck, but reading my tournament back, I didn’t have to. Because my report was very short and clear on the finals: you were my all star both games and helped me to win my first Cube Invitational. Such a nice memory, and couldn’t have picked a better card to share it with.
