You are in one of my favourite Cubes, my Masters #1 Cube. I used to never really liked limited. Because back in the day limited meant playing a vanilla 2/1 for 2 mana and getting your face smashed in by a random angel. Funny thing that my first 3-0 draft ever, at the 2006 Dutch National Championships, was with multiple vanilla 2/1’s for 2 mana. I hated it.
What I did love, was Modern Masters limited. They felt way more like Cube, the general power level of all the cards were so much higher, especially commons. I loved Modern Masters so much that I actually built a set Cube for Modern Masters. But there is more. Those sets were so much fun, that I actually wondered about how a Masters set would look like if I designed it. If I wasn’t bound to the restraints of Modern. If I could have commons be built arounds because I could have multiples of them in this Cube.
You immediately sprung to my mind. You used to be a fringe card in Pauper, another format I actually really love, and I always thought you were so cool. You were a card that would support such cool decks, such cool synergies and the thought of sometimes, just sometimes, drafting 3 of you for a banger The Rock deck, felt like a magical Christmas land. Building the Cube in 2013 started with you, you were the first card on the list, and it took off from there. Starting with you, and a black and green deck I had in mind abusing your awesome play patterns with green and black madness and dredge cards, opened up to a blue and green madness strategy, a red and black self-mill strategy. The Cube had its fair share of iterations, but never any big reworks, because you as a starting point was just perfection. And till this day, having made 6 Masters Cubes by now, and having 19 Cubes total, my Masters #1 is still one of my favourites. All thanks to you.
With love,
Hanjo
