Dear Seraph of Dawn,

<3

When I built my first Masters Cube back in 2013 I was browsing commons to put in this Cube. What I enjoyed so much about Modern Masters, what was the inspiration for this Cube, was that you could build highly synergistic decks, but also ‘good cards’ decks. And that there were a lot of pieces that functioned in both decks. I was really looking at Tallowisp as a potential strategy so I needed cards that were good with an aura slapped on them.

Back then the choices for auras were way more limited. Because there are 3 copies of each common in the Cube they have a real impact. At common I opted for Knightly Valor for the aura theme. I didn’t just want removal aura’s, I also wanted a couple of buff aura’s. What I always dislike about buff auras is, that if your opponent have the removal, the value and tempo blow is so big. Knightly Valor at least brought a friend, which softened this pain. I really liked the idea of playing you, Seraph of Dawn, on 4 and playing Knightly Valor on 5. Creating a 4/6 vigilance, lifelink and flying banger with only 2 cards, while bringing a friend. A true ‘build your own Baneslayer’. Upside enough to risk a removal bringing it all down.

Knightly Valor got cut from the Cube a long time ago. That card was always drafted last, sometimes someone put a copy in their deck as a tutor target with Tallowisp or Heliod’s Pilgrim, but it was never a card playable on their own. But you, on the other hand, were a cornerstone for the Tallowisp deck. You actually didn’t need any aura attached to you to build a Baneslayer. You were already really strong on your own, any white deck in this Cube is happy to play you. I fell in love with you for how perfect you are in this Cube, being good in both highly synergistic decks and ‘good cards’ decks. Because you are not part of a ‘build your own Baneslayer’, you are the common Baneslayer.

With love,

Hanjo
