Last weekend my friends were playing an RCQ. I don’t care much for competitive Magic anymore, I was more curious if a couple of them were up for a Cube afterwards. I wanted to make it my goal, now that the kids are getting a bit older, to on average do one 4+ player Cube draft per week this year. A total of 52 4+ player drafts in 2026. Doesn’t really matter if I make my goal, I just wanted an excuse to see my friends as much as I can and play my beloved Cubes. Lucky me, this week there were 3 friends who wanted to Cube. The draft and the first 2 rounds with my 2009 Power Cube were quite quick, so we decided to jam another draft. My friend Marijn asked to play my Peasant Cube and I was immediately excited.
Lately I’m really into my Peasant Cube. I’m just really enjoying the gameplay it is offering, the depth in both the draft and the games. Plus I see all the other players really enjoying themselves which is always a nice boost as the designer. I love it when players discover old or new cards, or learn from previous drafts with this Cube and make strong choices. Marijn only started Magic a couple of years ago and asked after the draft if Flametongue Kavu is a valid first pick because he thought it looked very strong. We all strongly agreed that it is definitely first pickable and a complete powerhouse in this Cube.
One of the new cards my friends got to discover this draft was you, Scuttling Sentinel. And I know they were discovering you, because they had to read you. I absolutely love you in this Cube. You are a combat trick adding a total of 4 power to the board. You have a flexible mana cost. You are playable in so many archetypes. You are Flicker-able for additional value, you are protection, you are sneaky. You are everything a Magic card should be, catching an opponent off guard in so many ways. And that is what my opponents learned this draft, because together we caught them off guard and cruised to a trophy draft. We taught them to value you more highly next time.
With love,
Hanjo
