We used to grind every Modern Pro Tour Qualifier (PTQ) we could find together. I played you in my Living End deck, a deck which I adored. The greatest thing about creature based combo decks in my oponion is the plan B: attack. For the Elfball decks, like the one Luis Scott-Vargas won Pro Tour Berlin with in 2008, this was quite a common sight. People were used to see Elves attack. But people weren’t used to see you, Deadshot Minotaur, attack.
It was always so lovely to see my opponents faces when I would cast you. They would always have an ‘oh crap’ expression. They felt untouchable with their counterspells, but now realising if they spend them all on draft commons they would just simply come back later with Living End. Winning by simply casting the creatures that are in the Living End deck has been one of the great joys in my life.
I remember playing a PTQ together back in 2012 in Leuven. We were playing Ruud van Warmenhoven, one of the old Pro Players from the Netherlands. He was playing an Esper Control deck, and was set on winning game 3 with the Vendillion Clique he had in play. He was, as so many of my opponents always were, hiding behind counterspells. When I cast you we got to see that ‘oh crap’ moment. He thought for a while, needing to evalute this new situation, and decided he could simply let you resolve and race you. When you entered the battlefield I pointed at his Vendillion Clique. Ruud didn’t know there was actual text on you. You shot that bird out of the sky and we swiftly won that match.
Because of this memory I’ve added you to my Mich-Masters Cube. A cube where you don’t only get to shine as an efficient cycler for Lightning Rift and Astral Slide. Because your text actually comes in handy shooting down birds, especially when you get to recycle your enters ability with Astral Slide. I love our memories, I love the gameplay you offer and I love it that I get to cherish both in one of my cubes.
With love,
Hanjo
