I started playing my local FNM at the same time you were printed. When I started playing FNM I played this WhiteWeenie Equipment deck. Horrible deck, especially in a world taken by storm by the Affinity menace. But I enjoyed my little white guys and my equipments as a 14 year old. I remember also playing you out in this deck, and even though Baneslayer wasn’t printed yet, building your own Baneslayer was also very potent in that time.
In 2009 I built my first Cube: my Peasant Cube. For me it was very clear at the time that there are certain uncommons you want to exclude from this Cube. Sol Ring, Skullclamp, Force of Will, Strip Mine and Library of Alexandria are some clear examples of this. Of course I put you in, Loxodon Warhammer. I had fond memories of you and you fit this Cube perfectly. Because it was one of 2 Cubes in our playgroup (my friend Tim built a Power Cube, as an ode to those times I’ve built my 2009 Power Cube) we played my Peasant Cube so, so much. I remember winning a draft with this Blue Black based control deck that played very few creatures, just a couple of value creatures like Shriekmaw and Mulldrifter. But that deck also played you, because even if you only had a few creatures, you were so strong. You were too strong. After a long discussion we’ve collectively decided to cut you from that Cube.
I’ve never dared to put you back. I think the same reasoning still stands: any deck will play you and you will be one of the best cards in any deck. Plus Behemoth Sledge is still in that Cube and that is one of the strongest cards of the Cube. The only thing that has going for it is that it costs 2 different colours of mana so you can’t just play it in any deck (but people always splash for it). The other day I was proving my own point again.
Couple of weeks ago I was drafting a beautiful Cube. My brother is a natural creative person, always has been. From painting Bob Ross at home, to painting murals in our primary school, to now painting and drawing Magic cards. He has taken on the amazing and impressive project of drawing his own Cube: The Scriptorium. I drafted a Blue and Black control deck that didn’t play that many creatures. Mostly just some value creatures like Shriekmaw and Mulldrifter. And I drafted you, Loxodon Warhammer. And the result was just the same as it was 17 years ago. I won most of my games with you, Loxodon Warhammer, even if I only played a couple of creatures. You are still just that good.
